About The Supplement
The importance of Joint Health as we age
As we all age, our joints tend to give us pain from time to time and in some cases the pain can be considerable. But why does this happen as we get older? The most common forms of joint pain are arthritis of the knees, hips, hand and wrist, spine and sometimes shoulders.
In essence, at the end of each of our bones, is a smooth lining of protective cartilage and other soft tissues that also produce a liquid called synovial fluid. It is the combination of this soft cushion of cartilage and the synovial fluid that helps our joints remain mobile and healthy.
However with ageing, the cartilage can deteriorate from wear and tear and the protective membranes can tend to dry out, allowing the bones to start rubbing against each other. This, in turn, leads to inflammation and pain.
The first and most obvious way to push back potential joint problems is to ensure that your weight is under control. According to a national study, you are four times more likely to develop arthritis if you are obese, so this is a major risk factor which can be controlled. Studies also show that exercise can significantly reduce the onset of arthritis, with the best exercises being swimming, cycling and even using weights providing they are reasonably light. Joint movement is key to healthy joints
In addition, there are a variety of nutrients that are used in joint health products such as glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronic acid. These materials are all implicated in the day to day function of healthy joints. Also, the use of hydrolysed collagen has been shown in some studies to contribute to joint health too, as it plays a major role in healthy connective tissues such as tendons and ligaments.
Micronutrients too have been shown clearly by scientists to contribute to the maintenance and formation of connective tissues such as vitamin C, manganese and also copper.
The Prime Fifty Healthy Joints product contains not only a combination of the main front line joint health ingredients but also key micronutrients that have been proven to help support healthy tendons and ligaments.
Behind the formula
Prime Fifty Healthy Joints formula
Prime Fifty Advanced Healthy Joints formula has been specifically created for the needs of the over 50’s, as part of a nutritional range designed to help you stay active.
Supporting your joints and connective tissues such as tendons and ligaments, is vital to help maintain movement, strength and agility, and this unique formula has been developed to help support your joints, ligaments and tendons and help them stay in prime condition.
Found naturally in quite high concentration in joints, glucosamine is recognised throughout the world as a front line joint health ingredient. It is a basic building block of certain constituents of cartilage. Glucosamine is important for maintaining elasticity, strength and resilience of cartilage , helping to reduce damage to joints.
This is another material found naturally in joint tissues such as cartilage and connective tissues. Molecularly, chondroitin is a mixture of large molecular weight glycosamino glycans (GAGs) and other polymers. GAG’s are the substances in which collagen fibres are embedded.
Chondroitin tends to absorb water, adding to the thickness and elasticity of collagen. Also chondroitin is believed to destroy harmful enzymes in joint tissues which are responsible for breaking down cartilage.
Collagen is a key constituent of cartilage too, so hydrolysed collagen (chopped up to make it more absorbable/ bioavailable) is also being studied extensively as a newer joint health ingredient. Despite there being no approved joint health claims for this ingredient, there is much evidence from various companies and scientists around the world that hydrolysed collagen is absorbed effectively and that in some cases, joint health has been proven to improve. Work continues in this important field by scientists across the world.
A fourth joint health ingredient used by Prime Fifty is MSM, a sulphur containing nutrient which again has been studied across the world within joint health science. MSM contains a high level of sulphur and it is the presence of this available sulphur that some believe is the reason why MSM may support joint health.
In many studies, Vitamin C has been conclusively shown to contribute to the formation of collagen, which is the protective layer between bones, whilst manganese and copper are proven scientifically to contribute to the maintenance of tendons and ligaments. As tendons and ligaments are both connected to bone, and collagen plays a key role in bone movement, Prime Fifty believes these are highly relevant ingredients to use in joint health products, hence their inclusion.
One of the cell damaging mechanisms within the body is known as ‘oxidative stress’. As we age, this so called oxidative stress increases. This is why Prime Fifty has also added selenium, vitamin C and zinc, as all three of these nutrients contribute to the reduction of this oxidative stress, so protecting our cell damage to some extent. Such cell damage also occurs within joints and therefore these ingredients are key additions to the formula.
