About The Supplement
The importance of Vision and Eye Health as we age
The Prime Fifty Vision Support formula has been specifically developed for the needs of the over 50’s, as part of a nutritional range designed to help you stay healthy and active. Looking after our eyes becomes even more important as we age with regular eye check-ups being the best way to manage our eye health and also detect various diseases, such as glaucoma, diabetes, and other problems such as AMD (Age Related Macular Degeneration), which can cause vision loss.
This unique, age-tailored formula includes a selection of carefully chosen, scientifically researched nutritional ingredients, tailored for the over 50’s.
We all tend to take vision for granted, but as we age, we become more and more prone to oxidative attack at the back of the eye, at the very centre of the retina called the macula.
One way in which the macula protects itself, is through the presence of two natural carotenoids namely lutein and zeaxanthin, which are effective at absorbing the high energy, damaging UV light. Out of 600 or so carotenoids found in nature, only lutein and zeaxanthin are found in the macula of the eye. These carotenoids are present solely to protect the macula against this potential oxidative attack. As we age, we tend to have reduced levels of these key nutrients in the macula. And only our diet can replenish these diminishing levels, as these nutrients cannot be made endogenously.
In one of the biggest studies ever carried out on eye health (AREDS 2), 4000 people across 82 clinical sites in the US participated and it was found that these key carotenoids combined with other key micronutrients (zinc, vitamin C, vitamin E and copper) led to a protective effect against age related macular degeneration in older adults.
Following this ground breaking study, the American Academy of Ophthalmology now recommends that these micro nutrients are added to the diets of older adults who are at risk of macular degeneration.
A further very important nutrient, namely an Omega 3 fatty acid, consisting of the long chain fatty acid, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), has also now been proven scientifically to contribute to maintaining healthy vision. As the constitution of the retina is very high in fat, especially with this Omega 3 DHA, it is no surprise that low intakes of omega-3 fish oil from the diet have been associated with poor eye health in later life.
Furthermore, a number of various vascular issues can also affect the health of the retina, such as high blood sugar, high blood pressure and weakened blood capillaries.
‘Prime Fifty’s Vision Support’ formulation consists of all the relevant nutrients to support general vision and eye health. In addition, the unique and tailored age specific formulation, contains a patented healthy ageing blend comprising all the key micronutrients needed to maintain the general health of the over 50s together with enhanced bioavailability and absorption.
Behind the formula
Prime Fifty’s Vision Support & Eye Health formula
Prime Fifty have used a carefully selected group of nutrients to support your vision and eye health, including the following:
The Omega 3 fatty acids used in this formulation are of exceptional quality and concentration. The capsule contains 300mg of pure DHA/EPA, which together has been scientifically proven to contribute to normal vision.
These two special carotenoids exist in the macula (centre of retina) at high concentrations with their presence being to protect the macula by filtering out damaging ultraviolet light. These nutrients have also been researched in the largest eye health study ever conducted (AREDS 2).
This key vitamin contributes to normal vision and also protects cells from oxidative damage caused by ultraviolet light and endogenous free radical attack also. Older adults tend to lack plasma riboflavin as proven in nutrition and food intake studies.
This essential carotenoid vitamin has been scientifically shown to contribute to the maintenance of normal vision.
In addition to immunity benefits, vitamin C also protects cells from oxidative damage, which is associated with ageing processes. It also contributes to collagen formation which is necessary for the elasticity and health of blood vessels, highly relevant to the retina.
Zinc, Copper, Vitamin C and Vitamin E in unison, have been the subject of the largest eye health study ever conducted, in which these nutrients formed the heart of a formulation which was shown to reduce the incidence of macula degeneration, in trials conducted in 4000 older adults across 82 clinical centres.
The ageing gut tends to be less efficient at absorbing micronutrients from our diet. Therefore both BioPerine, a special patented black pepper extract and also ultra-soluble minerals, have been utilised in this and every Prime Fifty formulation to enhance bioavailability and absorption.
